The Responsibility of Your Response

By Pastor Joel Sims

“You have heard that it was said, ‘eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other toward him also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. – Mathew 5:38-42

My response matters more than what happens to me.

Responsibility means my response is always within my ability. Response-ability.

You can’t make me _________.

It can’t make me_________.
Give up
Turn back

Anytime I allow something to control me. I have done something I never want to do.

I’ve given away my power.

Life is not going to always be fair. You will not be able to control it the way you always want to.

But you MUST learn this: while you can’t always control life, you can always control your response to it.

I couldn’t control my father passing away at 17. I could control if I drank. I could control if I did drugs. I could control who and what I turned to. I could control if I ran to or away from God.

“I couldn’t help it!”…That’s a lie. “They made me!”…Lie. Take control of yourself!

The only one you surrender control to is The Lord. You lay down your will in response to His will. But, when you allow something or someone to take your power of response you have made them Lord over you. Don’t!

One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And one who rules his spirit, than one who captures a city – Proverbs 16:32 (NASB)

Before looking to control things… Control you!
In doing so you will find freedom! You will find the Lord! You will find fulfillment! And you will find the influence of the others slipping. My response to what happens to me is MORE important than what happens to me.
