Trusting God When Life Isn’t As Expected

By Caitlin Lucas

If you’ve made it this far in your life, then you’ve experienced moments when the plans you’ve made for yourself have unraveled and expectations fade into uncertainty. We’ve all experienced challenging moments, some more than others. It’s during these times that our faith is truly tested, challenging us to put our trust in God, even when circumstances defy our understanding.

Being a Christian doesn’t provide immunity from challenges. Scripture consistently reminds us that trials and tribulations are inevitable, serving as a way for our faith to be refined and our reliance on God to deepen.

Trusting God is relatively easy when life unfolds according to our plans, but true faith and trust in God are forged in adversity. Faith is not a blind leap; it is a trust born out of an unwavering belief in a God who is both loving and all-knowing.

A few years ago, the Lord prompted me to study His faithfulness. At the time, everything in my life seemed smooth, and I questioned why this was needed when my faith seemed unshakable. Nevertheless, I followed His leading and studied the topic more deeply. Little did I know that the stories I studied – like the woman with the issue of blood whose faith made her whole (Luke 8:40-47), the journey of Abraham and Sarah who were delivered a son despite the natural saying it was impossible (Genesis 21), and the story of Joseph, how despite his brother’s jealousy and plans for evil, God used them for good, putting him in a position of power (Genesis 37-50) – would become a source of strength during my own crisis.

When my faith was tested, I didn’t surrender to despair; instead, I remembered His faithfulness. I recalled His promises to Joseph, Abraham, and others, knowing that He would also be faithful to me. My faith endured the test, I don’t say this out of pride, but out of realization of the Father’s love for me. His plans for me were significant, and He knew I would need help, which came through the Holy Spirit.

Life hasn’t been a constant breeze since then, and my faith has been tested since, but each time I know where to turn. I seek Him in prayer and meditate on the scriptures He directed me to. Despite the challenges, my faith in God remains. I trust that His plans will prevail, not through my own efforts, but through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Trusting God involves seeking His guidance through prayer, meditating on His Word, and aligning our hearts with His will. Proverbs 3:5-6 urges us to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

In those moments when prayers seemingly go unanswered, remind yourself that God’s timing is perfect. He works in ways beyond our comprehension. As Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

As we navigate life’s unpredictable journey, let our trust in God remain unwavering. Seek His guidance and know His plans surpass our own, and He holds the knowledge of what lies ahead. Trust Him today with your future, and strengthen your faith to stand unwavering amidst life’s challenges.
