What’s Your Cold Plunge?

By Anna Kate Williams

I joined a new gym recently and have been taking full advantage of all the amenities that are included with my membership – except one. There was one in particular that was just daunting, and quite frankly, I was terrified of it. If I’m being honest, I like comfort. This daunting thing was the cold plunge.

One day, I was sitting in the sauna with a group of ladies after boot camp. After sitting in silence in the sauna for about 10 minutes, they sparked a conversation with each other about going and sitting in the cold plunge. On their way out, they looked at me and said “cold plunge, you going?” Before I even had time to think about it and express all my reasons for not wanting to do it, not having dry clothes to change into on the way home, etc., I found myself already up and walking with them toward the cold plunge.

Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a cold plunge, but up until this point, I had only attempted it once a few days prior and maybe lasted 10 seconds. It was miserable and I immediately got out as soon as the pain started.

This time was different. Having two new friends with me, we stepped in together and endured for the full 3 minutes. They were coaching me through it the entire time because they had done it before. About a minute and a half in, we found ourselves in normal conversation, laughing, and the pain and discomfort weren’t so bad anymore. Fast forward a few months to now, I do the cold plunge every morning and love it.

What’s my point in telling you about my cold plunge story? Am I telling you to do it? Absolutely not. However, we all have a “cold plunge” in our life. Something that seems daunting and uncomfortable. Something that maybe we really want to do, but haven’t given it a chance or just stepped out. I’ve learned through many experiences in my personal life, that many times we just have to get up and step in. Sometimes it’s a step in and sometimes it’s a full dive. It is much easier when you have someone on your left and right pushing you to step in and the beautiful thing is that they’re right there to coach you through it.

Maybe in your life, you’re looking and you don’t initially see someone on your left and right as you approach that thing. There’s nothing He is asking you to do that He’s just going to leave you hanging once you step in. He is a faithful God who will guide you and go with you. He is also faithful to send people across your path to uplift you and walk with you in what He is asking you to do.

Deuteronomy 31:6 says “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or in dread of them, for the Lord your God is the One who is going with you. He will not desert you or abandon you.” I’m so thankful that Jesus is always with us. He will never leave you and He will never forsake you. Even in the uncomfortable times.

I pray you find comfort in that today. That the One who goes before you, is right there with you.
